Researchers at CERN, the particle physics laboratory that helped create the Internet, have been working on a new superfast Internet infrastructure they expect to be as much as 10 000 times faster than the current Internet. Researchers at CERN say that the new network infrastructure will enable users to download entire films in seconds.
At speeds around 10 000 times faster than a typical connection banda ancha, the Grid will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue of Great Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.
The most recent spin-off of CERN, the particle physics centre that created the Web, the network could also provide the type of power required to transmit holographic images; allow online gambling with hundreds of thousands of players, and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.
Unlike the current Internet, which is a mish-mash of technologies held together with cables age, the new Grid is built with dedicated fiber optic cables routing centers and modern, that is, there is no obsolete components to slow of data. To date there are already 55 000 servers installed.
Everything sounds good, but I wonder how long it will be before SA gets a sniff at such speed?
